“That’s it. I’m done with this. This isn’t a relationship, this is bullshit. Have a good life!”
“Liam?”
You walked outside, instantly wrapping your arms around yourself to sheild you from the bitter chill of the night. Liam and you had gone to a bar with a few friends to celebrate the wrapping of the Hunger Games movies. Liam had been on the road most of the year and you’d missed having your best friend home so when you found out he was finally coming back, you and a few mutual friends decided to take him out.
The night had gone off without a hitch. Drinks were flowing and you two had been inseparable all night until his girlfriend called and he stepped outside. At first you didn’t notice how long he’d been gone until one of your friends brought it up and you decided to go check. Not thinking it’d be to cold, you skipped grabbing your jacket and walked outside. You had heard him yelling over the phone and instantly knew they were having another argument. Those had been pretty frequent between them but when you heard him yell that it was over, you knew it was serious.
“How much of that did you hear?”
He sighed heavily, turning to face you while running a hand over his thick dirty blonde hair.
“Enough.” You nodded, rubbing your bare arms as you approached him, leaning into his arms for warmth. “You okay, bear?”
“It’s just hard to believe I wasted so much time on her.” He wrapped his large, muscular arms around you, rubbing your back gently to keep you warm. “I’m going to get out of here, she always finds a way to ruin my night.”
“Oh come on, we were having so much fun. Let’s just make you forget about her, okay? A few more drinks and you won’t even remember her name, I promise.”
He looked down at you. His heavy set eyes reading into yours before finally giving in. “Okay, okay fine.”
You smiled up at him, pulling away to grab his hand and pull him back inside. This was supposed to be a good night. All about his homecoming. There was no way you were letting that bitch ruin it for him. You’d never liked her to begin with, though you didn’t have much reason not to. She’d always been sweet and cordial with you but you saw how she acted with your best friend and it made you want to strangle her a few times. Liam was a good guy with a beautiful heart. He deserved more than that.
Pulling him to the bar, you yelled out for the bartender to bring you another round. You were determined to keep your promise. In the few moments you weren’t paying attention, Liam had spaced out, no doubt repeating the fight over in his head like he always did. You cupped his cheeks, bringing him back down to earth with you before smiling up at him.
“Hey you, stay with me, okay?”
“You’re the only one I’d never leave.” He smiled, leaning down to kiss your forehead before reaching over your small frame to grab the bottles of beer from the bar top behind you.
You felt the heat rising in your cheeks and you took the bottle from his hand, clinking it to his before taking a pull. “I’m glad you’re home.”
“Missed me that much?” He looked down at you while taking a sip of his drink.
“I just can’t believe it never gets easier.” A sad smile crossed your face as you thought about the heartbreaking goodbyes each time Liam had to leave.
“Omg! This is our song, let’s dance!” Your friend pulled your arm, dragging you to the dancefloor. You shot him an apologetic look but he just chuckled and winked at you.
You danced with your friend to the beat of the song, swaying your hips and shaking your ass when called for until your song ended and another came on. With everyone on the dancefloor, you noticed that Liam had hung back by the bar. You’d assumed he was wallowing in his own pity party but his eyes were solely focused on you. You motioned your finger for him to come over but he shook his head with a laugh so you walked up to him, dragging him back to the dancefloor with you. Wrapping your arms around his neck, his hands slipped down from your waist to your hips, moving them slowly with yours. The closeness of your bodies moving as one made the room hotter than before.
Your hands slide up through his hair, grabbing it gently as you danced. You heard a low growl coming from his throat and he pressed you harder against him. You couldn’t explain the butterflies you were feeling at that moment. Your bodies grinding against each other, his hands gripping your hips as if his life depended on it, your heart beats synchronizing to each other’s beats. You’d never felt a connection like that before.
The music slowed but neither of you pulled away. Instead, his arms released your hips and wrapped around your waist, your bodies never parting from each other, and he began to sway you slowly. With your arms around his neck, you leaned your head against his chest, his chin resting comfortably over it as you danced in silence for a few moments. One of his arms slid up your back, stopping between your shoulder blades while his other arm held you tighter.
“I love you.” You heard him whisper.
“I love you, bear.”
“No,” He shook his head and you raised yours slowly, meeting his deep blue eyes. “I’m in love with you. That’s why none of my relationships ever worked out. All of them were jealous of you and our bond. That’s what my fight was about. The fact that I was out with you.”
“Me?” You looked up at him confused.
“Yes, you. It’s always been you. I was just to scared of ruining what we have.”
You had always wondered what it would be like to hear those words. Your feelings for Liam had always been kept at bay for that same reason. You would always play nice with all of his girlfriends and you loved nothing more than when the two of you would cuddle on the couches and just pig out with pizza and movies. The thought of making this more had often occurred to you. Mostly on nights like where you two would laugh and hang out until the early hours of the morning or when you’d say your goodbyes before he left for the airport and you hugged him for just a little while longer. You’d never acted on those thoughts. Mostly because he was always away or in a different relationship, but the fear or him not feeling the same was always in the back of your mind.
Until now.
He looked down into your eyes trying to read your thought process. You could tell he was nervous by the silence and he opened his mouth to start rambling like he always did when he was anxious but you closed the insignificant gap between your lips. All of your feelings towards him being told in one deep, magical kiss. You could’ve sworn you saw stars from the spark. You’d wanted to do that for so long and when his hand cupped your neck, holding you lips against his, you knew everything was going to be okay because you were lucky enough to have best friend as your soulmate.
