Snowflakes covered my hair as I stepped out of the car. The air was so cold that the flakes remained crystallized for a while before my body heat could melt them. White snow covered the trees. Christmas lights lined the street. It may have been only 25 degrees outside, but it never felt better being in my hometown. It was the best time of the year to admire it properly.

“I don’t know how you survived up here.” Dean shivered, grabbing our luggage out of the car. “My balls are almost completely frozen.”

I chuckled, helping him with the lighter bags while he took the carry-ons. “Easy there, Ohio boy. We get the same weather as you guys, our scenery is just better.”

“You make it hard to argue with you.” He laughed, leaning down to kiss my cheek before we walked down the pathway to our hotel.

Dean and I had been dating for a while but the chance hadn’t come to bring him to meet my parents. We were always on the road and when we weren’t we just wanted to lay low in our own home but since we got some time off for the holidays we figured it would be the perfect time to visit them.

After getting changed, we left the hotel to meet my parents at a restaurant on Main St. Dean threw his arm over my shoulder as we walked down the street, looking through the decorated store windows.

“This place is like a Hallmark movie.” He laughed, looking around.

“I know, it really makes me miss coming here.” I replied, hooking my thumb into his belt loop as he pulled me close into his side.

“Do you guys have a tree lighting ceremony and all that good shit?” He asked, motioning his head towards the giant Christmas tree in the center of the plaza. “They do that in Boston.”

I nodded my head, laughing. “We do! Man it’s actually a pretty big deal. It’s almost like in the grinch movie where everyone comes around and there’s Christmas music playing from large speakers and everyone gathers around.”

He laughed, looking at all the decorations on the enormous tree.

“Y/N? Is that you?”

I turned towards the familiar voice to see my ex approaching.

“Y/E/N! Hey!” I smiled, returning his hug as he pulled me in for a hug.

“How’ve you been? It’s crazy to even run into you! Your mom told me you’ve been traveling the world.” He smiled as his eyes looked into mine.

I could sense Dean stiffen a bit, uncomfortable by the reunion as my ex’s hands were still on my arms.

“Yeah its actually my first time back in a few years. I’ve been good! I get to travel around with this hunk” I smiled pointing at Dean. “Y/E/N – this is Dean, my boyfriend. Dean – this is my ex, Y/E/N. We dated in high school.”

“Nice to meet you man.” Dean said, shaking the man’s hand.

He used his deeper voice. It was a tone that only came out when he wanted to assert some dominance.

“Likewise man! Thanks for bringing her back to town. Everyone knew she was going to be outta here as soon as she graduated but we didn’t think she’d come back.”

“Ha, yeah.” Dean nodded.

“So! What have you been up too?” I asked to fill the awkwardness.

“Actually i got into med school after graduation. I just started my first year residency at the hospital here. It’s not as hectic as your life I’m sure but it’s been exciting even for a small town.” He smiled.

“Good for you! How’s your mom doing?”

“She’s great! She’s retired now but she just fills her time gossiping with your mom.”

I laughed, knowing how the two of them got when they were with each other. “Makes sense.” I nodded. “Anyway, we’re actually meeting my parents so we have to get going. It was great catching up!”

“Yeah, it was! Don’t be a stranger next time. Come by more often!”

“I’ll try!” I said with a wave as Dean and I started walking again.

Dean

Fuck that guy.

I didn’t like the way he looked at her. The way his hands lingered on her a little to long.

Fuck him.

I’ve fought a lot of guys in my lifetime but I’d never met one with a more punchable face.

Who did he think he was telling me to bring her by more often? She was her own person. If she wanted to come she would’ve.

At the restaurant I met her parents for the first time. They asked about my upbringing. My relationship with Y/N. How we met. What my job was like. But then the conversation fell into that guy again when Y/N brought up the fact that we ran into him.

“He’s such a sweet kid.” Y/M/N said. “He always drops off his mother at my house, or offers to chauffeur us around. Oh, Dean. You should’ve seen how smitten Y/N was with him in high school. They were together all the time. I still have pictures of them at their prom. Ugh, the cuteness. He’s done so well for himself actually.”

“Oh.” I said, nodding.

“Y’know – he’s actually going to be our new doctor.” Y/D/N mentioned.

Y/N nodded along but she wasn’t to comfortable with the conversation either. I mean there had to be a reason they broke up. Otherwise Mr.Perfect would have still been in the picture instead of me.

Whatever. Fuck that guy.

After dinner, we said our goodbyes to her parents, agreeing to go to their annual Christmas Eve party tomorrow night. We would’ve gone back to their house for her to spend more time with them but luckily they had a lotta shit to do for the party.

“They really liked you.” Y/N said, tucking herself into my side as we walked.

“Not as much as Y/E/N that’s for sure.” I replied.

She stopped walking, turning her head to look up at me. “What?”

“Come on, don’t play dumb. They had it written all over their faces that they wished you were still with Mr. Perfect.”

“Well I’m not. That’s not up to them.” She replied, grabbing my coat to get me to look at her.

“Yeah, but they think you settled for me instead of the fucking family doctor.”

“It doesn’t matter what they think. I know they liked you and they’ll grow to love you. They’ve just known him forever.” She argued.’

I looked down at her with a sigh shaking my head. “Maybe they’re right. Maybe you did settle and you deserve someone better.”

“Dean.” She said, her stern tone making me straight up. “You don’t get to decide what I deserve. Nobody does. The reason I’m not with ‘Mr. Perfect’ is because he wasn’t perfect for me. I wanted to travel the world and he wanted to keep me couped in this tiny town. You’re what’s perfect for me. You’re what I deserve. A partner in crime willing to follow me any and everywhere so we can explore this world together like we have been.”

A small smile crept onto my face as she spoke. “Man, I love you.”

“I love you.” She replied, leaning up to kiss me. “Don’t you ever think I would chose anyone over you.”

I returned her kiss, pulling a small velvet box out of my pocket. “Well – if that’s the case-”

Her eyes widened as I got down on one knee.

“I was going to wait until Christmas morning for the perfect time but every time we’re together is perfect. I don’t want to wait any more. Y/N will you marry me?”

Her eyes overflowed with tears and she smiled bigger than I’d ever seen. “Of course I will!”

I slide the diamond ring onto her finger and as soon as it was on, she jumped into my arms, knocking us both down into the snow, kissing me repeatedly.

“I love you! I love you! I love you!” She laughed, hugging me tightly.

“I love you too.” I laughed, returning her kisses.
