Y/N – Your Name //  Y/M/N – Your Mom’s name

After 5 days and 3 drafts, I’ve finally happy enough to post it. Sorry for the length, I hope you enjoy!

“Goddamnit.” I sucked in a breath as the feel of hot coffee burned into my skin.

“I am SO sorry – oh my god, oh my god!” The girl panicked, setting down the rest of her stuff before grabbing napkins to wipe me off. “I turned the corner – Kelly was talking into my headset – I wasn’t looking! I’m SO SO sorry!”

She rambled while I took off my wife beater letting her wipe the coffee off my abs. She looked like she was near tears so as much as my skin was burning, I felt bad for her.

“It’s fine – hey -“ I said lifting her chin. “I got other clothes, it’s cool.”

“God, Kelly’s going to kill me.” She sighed, placing her hands over her face. “It’s my first day and all I’ve done is fuck up.”

I chuckled and shook my head. “I won’t tell if you don’t.”

She looked up at me, tears still at bay. “Really?”

“Really. Besides, I’ve been burned with worse than just coffee.” I reassured her, holding out my hand. “I’m Dean by the way.”

“Y/N.” She said, shaking my hand with a half-smile.

“You said it’s your first day?” I asked, helping her wipe the mess on the floor.

“Yeah.” She nodded.

“Don’t sweat it then. Everyone’s first day here is nerve-wrecking. Except mine of course.”

That got a laugh out of her. She had pretty smile. Perfectly white teeth.

“I must’ve missed it. Who are you working for?”

“Kelly Cranston?” She said. “The creative director? I’m her new assistant. I’ll be lucky if I still have the job by the end of the day.”

“Well if you don’t, I’ll have take you on as my assistant.”

She gave a full laugh this time. “Assistant to a lunatic might be a more fitting roll from me considering the chaos I leave behind everywhere.”

With a laugh, I nodded my head. “How about we grab a drink tonight and we can discuss your qualifications?”

Her smile fell into something more shy and she bit the inside of her cheek. “Well – I – “

“Dean!” Renee called out from behind Y/N as she approached us.
“I gotta go.” Y/N said, grabbing her stuff from the ground “Sorry about all this again!”

With a an hour and a half until showtime, I reviewed my sets for the night. I had a promo first thing, a backstage interview, and a match. Easy enough. Until then, I needed to get some food.

Catering hall was full as always so I grabbed a plate of food and walked down one of the hallways to find a quiet places. A pair of long black boots dangling from a crate caught my attention. I got closer only to find that the boots were attached to Y/N’s legs as she sat back, leaning against the wall with her eyes closed listening to music. Her work headset sat next to her while she held a half-eaten hotdog in her hand.

“So this is why I haven’t seen you at catering all week.” I said, causing her to look up like she’d just gotten in trouble again.

“Oh – no. You won’t find me there. Catering gives me anxiety.” She said, waving her hand. “Too many people.”

“That’s how I feel.” I laughed, nodding my head at the space next to her. “Mind if I join you or am I part of that ‘too many people’?”

She laughed softly, scooting over to make some room for me. “I think you’re pretty okay so far.”

Placing a hand on my chest, I acted touched. “That’s the nicest thing anyone’s said about me.” I laughed, hoping onto the container with her. “Figured I scared you off the other day since you took off like a bat outta hell.”

Her laughed caused the corners of her eyes to crinkle and she shook her head.

“No – it takes a little more than that to scare me.” She replied, conveniently not giving reason as to why she left like that.

“What’re you listening to?” I asked, changing the subject.

With a shrug, she took out one of the earpieces and handed it to me. “Willie Nelson, is that weird? He calms me down on breaks.”

I raised my eyebrows as I put the earpiece in my ear.

Good taste in music.

“Actually – he’s one of my all time favorites. Don’t ask why.” I replied.

“Mine too. I haven’t met anyone that didn’t give me a weird look over it.” She finished the last bite of her hotdog and sighed in satisfaction as she sank back into the wall. “God that was good. It’s like the only thing I’ve eaten all day.”

“That’s it? Why didn’t you get anymore. Not like you have to pay for it.”

“I didn’t’ think I’d have the time.” She pouted.

“Well – i’m going to do something I’ve never done but here, we’ll share my plate.” I said, handing her my cornbread. “It’s my favorite but sharing is caring or whatever.”

Her smile accentuated her glowy skin and she took the cornbread from my hands. “You’re way to sweet.”

“Not sweet enough for you to have a drink with though.” I reminded, causing her to look down shyly as she bit into the bread.

“That – that wasn’t anything to do with you.” She said somewhat quietly. “Honestly, I just – I haven’t gone out with anyone in a long time. I panicked.”

“No way I believe that.” I shook my head. “You’re beautiful.”

“Thanks.” She smiled again as her cheeks reddened with blush. “But it’s true.”

“Why?” I asked, genuinely curious.

“Ma ma mama ma ma!” A kid’s voice rang through the hallway and Y/N was on alert, taking her headphone out and jumping off the crate.

A toddler came around the corner followed by an older woman who looked exactly like Y/N. The kid ran into Y/N’s arms and Y/N kissed her, before lifting her up into her arms.

“This.” She turned to me again, a different smile on her face. Prideful. “This is why.”

Ah. That would be a good reason.

“Dean, this is Zoey.” She said as the baby stared at me with a cute smile. “And this is my mom, Y/M/N. Mom travels with me to watch Zoey while I’m at work.”

“Nice to meet you.” I said, shaking her mother’s hand.

“You too.” She said, before turning her attention to Y/N and handing her a diaper back. “Alright, I should be back within a half hour.” She waved, walking back down the hall.

I was still in disbelief that Y/N had a kid. She was always dressed in black but she looked like she had a tiny figure. Guess it made sense as to why she blew me off.

“I’m going to take her to hang out with her for a little while. Thanks for having lunch with me.” She smiled, throwing the diaper bag over her shoulder before walking away.

“Ew, why are you talking to her?” Renee asked, coming up to me with her arms crossed.

“What’s it to you?” I turned to look at her, finishing off the cornbread that Y/N left.

“I’m just looking out for you is all.” She repeated, taking a seat next to me “Everyone know’s she’s a gold digging whore. I just don’t want you to fall into that trap.”

Eh. Renee had a jealous streak. We hooked up once or twice but she was notoriously crude about other women i talked to. I wasn’t going to take her to seriously on that.

“Hey!” I called out, seeing Y/N walking down the hallway. “Hey, wait up.”

She turned to the sound of my voice and a smile crossed her lips. “Hey you.”

“Where you going?”

“Got about an hour, figured I’d find a park to take Zoey too for a while. I like watching her outside. She really has a thing for grass.” She replied as I pulled her into my side for a half-hug.

“Mind if I join you?”

“Really?” She froze, looking up at me.

“Yeah really.” I replied. “Why’s that come as a shock?”

“It’s just… not a lot of people opt to use their spare time hanging out with a girl and her kid.” She replied, running her fingers through her hair.

“Well – I ain’t a lot of people.”

“Well if that’s the case, I’d love the company.” She nodded.

We walked outside, grabbing the baby, stroller and all, from Y/N’s mom. The two spoke for a minute discussing a pick up time and location then her mom jumped into her car and drove off.

Y/N looked at the stroller, making sure she had everything before her eyes went wide.

“Shit – I forgot my phone inside. Can you just watch her for two minutes? I’ll be right back!”

“Yeah – of course.” I nodded, watching as she gave a thankful smile before running back in.

I tickled the toddler’s stomach and she laughed, reaching her hands up for me to pick her up.

Unable to resist, I did, bouncing her gently causing her to laugh louder.

“What in the hell are you doing with a baby?” AJ laughed walking up to us.

“I’m just watchin’ her for a minute.” I replied as the baby played with my bangs.

Renee walked up to us, resting an arm over AJ’s shoulder. “Well look at that, she’s already got you playing daddy.”

“Who?” AJ asked, looking between us.

“That new girl you see everywhere. Y/N – something. Works with creative.”

“OH – damn brother, that’s not something you want to get involved with. She’s messy.”

What the hell did everyone know that I didn’t?

They were called before I could even ask but Y/N returned shortly and all that negativity left my mind.

“Who’s going to the park, huh? We’re going to the park!” Y/N said to the kid, causing her to laugh some more while she was strapped back in.

“Does she even know what you’re saying?” I asked, laughing as we started walking away from the arena.

“I think she just likes the sound of my voice.”

“Looks like her and I have something in common.” I smirked, throwing an arm over her shoulder as we walked.

I didn’t miss the adoring looks people were giving. We did sorta look like a couple with a baby. I couldn’t say I minded. The kid was cool. Y/N was one of a kind. And these looks beat the ones of judgement and fear I was used to.

Y/N laid a blanket down on the grass and took Zoey out, sitting her on it. She laid out a couple of toys and a bottle of water before taking a seat next to me.

I adjusted my hat and sunglasses so I wouldn’t be recognized but the kid decided she didn’t like them and crawled up to me to take them off. Laughing, I helped her keep her balance as she started to examine them.

“She’s a good kid.” I said, laying my head down on Y/N’s lap after Zoey lost focus and started playing on the grass.

“Thanks. Still, I worry about how much I can travel with her. Eventually I’ll have to find a job in one place so she can have a stable home.” She replied, running her fingers through my hair as she watched the girl play.

“I don’t think I can picture a day when I come into work and not seeing you running all over the building.” I replied.

“Eh, you managed just fine up until 3 weeks ago.”

“That was different. I didn’t know you.” I returned, looking out at the kid as she smelled the grass she’s ripped from the ground. “Bit of a personal question but where’s Zoey’s dad? He okay being around his kid for so long?”

Instantly she tensed. Her eyes didn’t look at me but I could see she didn’t want to talk about this.

“He’s … he … He doesn’t see her often.” She finally replied after a long silence.

“My dad wasn’t around either.” I replied, trying to ease the subject.

I could see she was visibly upset thinking about the whole thing so I left it alone.

After months of us shamelessly flirting, it was clear to everyone that we were a couple. I liked her. I liked her kid. I liked spending time with them both watching disney movies and singing along in hotel rooms or spending time with Y/N alone, singing karaoke and shutting down bars.

The only thing that had been hard to shake were the shit everyone had to say about her. I genuinely couldn’t figure it out.

Unfortunately after weeks of bliss on the road, it always had to come to an end for a few short days. Tonight was her last house show before having three days off and that meant I wouldn’t be seeing her. After driving her to her hotel, I got out of the car and pulled her into my arms, kissing the top of her head as I held her.

“I know you’re more than excited to finally get a break but I can’t say I’m happy about it.” I mumbled into her lips as she leaned up on her toes to kiss me.

She laughed against the kiss and wrapped her arms around my waist. “I know. It’s a little bittersweet.”

“I’ll miss having someone to bother at work.” I joked, leaning against the car with her on me.

“I bet.” She nodded. “Imagine all the free time you’ll have. Are you working all the way through?”

“No, I actually fly home Sunday morning and fly back out Monday afternoon but I never really know what to do with myself anyway.” I shrugged.

“Well, you could always stop by and visit me in Boston.” She replied. I could tell she was kidding by her tone but the idea wasn’t half-bad.

“Alright. Sounds like a plan.” I smiled.

Her brows flew up and I laughed, kissing her forehead.

“Well – it’s a date then.”

“It’s a date.” I nodded.

“I should get inside. “She nodded her head towards the lobby entrance. “I’ll uh – see you Sunday then?”

“Sunday.” I nodded, pulling her into me for a hug again.

“So – what’re your plans for the rest of the week?” Renee asked as we ordered another round of beers.

“He’s visiting his girlfriend after spending the last couple days moping around.” AJ laughed and I threw him a dirty look.

Her face changed into disgust and she shook her head. “Are you serious? Haven’t you figured out by now that she’s absolute trash?”

“No!” I answered, getting fed up with the gossip. “What the fuck could be so bad about her? I haven’t seen one fucking thing I don’t like.”

“She’s not the goody-goody you think she is.” She returned.

“I don’t think she’s a goody goody. In fact – I’m hoping she’s the opposite.” Aj and I laughed bumping our fists.

“Ew. You always did have a thing for whores.” She shook her head. “Do you seriously want to be another notch on her belt of pro-wrestlers she’s fucked? You’re just going to be another payout for her.”

“See what the fuck does that mean?”

The girl I knew was nothing like that. She was quiet. She worked herself to the bone. She never even hung out with anyone from work.

“So she hasn’t told you about her baby-daddy?” She raised a brow as an evil looking smirk crossed her lips.

“No.” I answered cautiously.

“Interesting.” Her smirk grew as she leaned closer, resting her arms on the bar. “Well – he goes by the ring name Bobby Thunder.”

We both nodded recognizing the name.

“He’s signed to Impact. They were married for like 3 years then the second she got pregnant, she divorced him and now gets over half of his income in alimony and child support. Poor guy lost it.”

My chest tightened as I listened to Renee. I hated that I believed her but it was hard not too. I figured the guy was a douchebag who skipped out on his kid but it sounded like Y/N evil.

We all heard about Bobby losing it. Poor guy went from one of the top promoters in the indies to countless stints in jail.

I barely got any sleep that night. Instead I made a call to change my flight for Cincinnati. I couldn’t ignore everything they’d been saying this time. She’d literally ruined someone’s life.

All for what? A little money? That shit was low.

I called her as soon as the clock hit 9. Any earlier and it would’ve woken the kid. It’s crazy to have to detach myself from not one but two people. A kid that wasn’t even mine at that. But I cared for her nonetheless.

“Hello?” She answered after the third ring.

It was clear by the background noise that she was making breakfast.

“Hey – its Dean.” I replied.

“Oh hey, baby! You at the airport?”

“Actually, I called to say I won’t be coming.”

“Oh.” She said with disappointment in her tone. “Is everything alright?”

“Yeah.” I answered, hating the taste of the next few words that were going to leave my mouth. “I uh- just don’t think we should see each other anymore.”

“What?” She asked as everything in the background just went silent. “Dean what’s this about?”

“I heard what you did to Bobby. I didn’t peg you for that kinda person, Y/N.”

I heard a tone I’d never heard from her. It was calm, deadly calm. Shit gave me goosebumps.

“You don’t know shit about me and Bobby.” She said. “None of you do. Have a good life Dean.”

The phone clicked and I sucked in a breath of air. I guess it was for the better.

“You…uh…you win.” I said as Renee answered the phone. “I broke it off with Y/N.”

“You deserve more than that.” She replied. “I’ll come over, we can talk about it, hows that sound?”

“Yeah – bring beer.”

Seeing Y/N as often as I did at work made me hate my decision to break it off. It had been a month and every time I saw her laugh with someone I’d get jealous. Everytime she dropped something, I had the urge to get it. Every time i spotted Zoey, i wanted to play with her.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t look past who she really was. I worked hard for all my money. I came from nowhere. I got myself out of the slums. Bought my mom a house. Busted my ass. Losing it all to a woman wasn’t in my agenda.

Also, it helped that she pretended i didn’t exist unless absolutely necessary.

Unfortunately, that was now.

Renee and I reviewed the script while she directed two stagehands to set up the interview set. They moved around the blue lights against the wall, while she looked on at the live feed on her Ipod, getting directions from Kelly over her headset.

She straightened two of the promo posters as they put up the screen then turned towards us.

“Young you’re on red, Ambrose on blue.” She said pointing towards the colored X markers on the ground.

“Renee where are your shoes?” She asked, looking up from her screen.

“Somewhere over there.” Renee pointed. “Why?”

“Get them on.” She ordered then turned to the shorter cameraman. “You need to get a platform to stand on. The frame cuts off the top of his head.”

It was always good seeing her work. She’d gotten a lot better since her first day. A lot more professional too.

After mumbling something into her mic, she looked up at my hair. “Ambrose, shake your bangs. You have one curl that falls to low on your face.”

She looked into the screen as I shook my head only to mumble something else into the mic.

“Ugh. No. Hang on.”

She set down her clipboard and Ipad, taking some water and wetting her hands before approaching me. Our height distance  as always my advantage because she’d always have to press against me, up on her toes, whenever she had to reach my head.

Instinctively, i placed my hands on her hips to help her balance but she didn’t give the slightest inclination that my touch had any effect on her. Or the fact that Renee cleared her throat to get our attention.

She just minded her business, ruffling my hair.

She smelled good. Goddamn she always smelled so good.

Stepping back from me, she didn’t even look at me, just looked at her screen to check how it looked on camera.

Out of spite, Renee kissed me, running another hand through my hair.

Again. No effect on Y/N.

“Alright, on if 5,4,3,2,1 -“ she pointed as us and we immediately got into character while she walked away.

“What was that?!” Renee asked after the shoot, hitting me in the arm.

“What was what?” I asked, grabbing a bottle of water.

“You, practically sucking face with her while I was putting on my shoes!”

“She was fixing my hair. You saw that.” I rolled my eyes.

“You’re my boyfriend now, Dean. We said we’d give this a real shot. You can’t be letting other girls touch you like that!”

“Whatever.” I sighed, hating the way boyfriend sounded coming from her.  “I gotta go get ready.”

After my match, I headed back towards the locker room when the sound of rushed footsteps and a panicked voice caught my attention. I turned the corner only collide with Y/N.

Tears streamed down her face as she mumbled a sorry and tried to brush past me.

“Woah, woah!” I placed my hands on her arms to calm her down. Something was obviously wrong. “What’s going on?”

“Not now, Ambrose!” She said coldly before shoving me off of her to pick her phone off the floor. “Mom? Mom?!” She repeated into it before running down the hallway.

I started to run after her but she disappeared in the parking lot.

I’d never seen her like that. Her face was red. She was scared and angry all at once. Her whole body was shaking. Something had to be happening with Zoey.

I never felt as useless as I did right then. I had no idea what was happening – where she was going – how I could help. I ran to ask Kelly but she was mum about the whole thing and of course no one knew a goddamn thing.

Finding her and her mom’s numbers, I called them repeatedly but I couldn’t get through to either of them.

“Dean?” Renee asked, coming into the hotel room. “What’s going on? I couldn’t find you after the show – everyone said you were in a hurry to leave.”

I threw my phone at the bed, sitting at the edge of it placing my head in my hands.

“Something’s going on with Y/N. Something happened. I saw her – I can’t get the image of her running out of the arena out of my head.” I shook my head. “She won’t answer the phone. I don’t know what to do.”

I could tell without even looking that she hand her hands on her hips and she was fuming.

“Why are you so concerned about Y/N? She’s bad news. Whatever it is – she probably had it coming!”

“I can’t do this anymore, Renee.” I shook my head looking up. “I don’t love you. The shit I felt with her – it was different. No matter what anyone has to say. The woman I fell in love with isn’t the one you kept talking shit about.”

“Are you seriously breaking up with me for some hooker?” She asked, her mouth hanging wide in disbelief.

“I have to. There’s no reason to prolong this.” I shrugged. “They’re prepping another room for me for the night. I’ll be out of here in a few.”

Around 2 in the morning, my phone rang. I hadn’t even realized I fell asleep but the ringtone blaring next to my ear alerted me instantly.

“Hello?” I answered, clearing my throat.

“Dean? It’s Y/M/N, Y/N’s mother.”

“Y/M/N? Is Y/N okay? Zoey? What happened tonight?” I asked, immediately sitting up.

“It’s a long story. We’re at the hospital right now. They’re keeping Zoey for overnight observation.”

“Overnight observation? What hospital are you at? I’m coming.” I said, getting out of the bed to get dressed.

“I don’t think Y/N would like that.” She answered quietly.

“I will search every hospital in the state. Just save me the time, Y/M/N.” I replied, slipping on my boots.

I heard a sigh over the phone before she spoke again. “Fine. I’ll text you the address and room number.”

It only took me 20 minutes to get to the hospital after receiving the text. Immediately rushing up to the room, I peeked through the doorway to see Y/N, eyes still red from tears sitting next to Zoey’s hospital bed. The baby looked okay but the concern in Y/N’s face scared me.

I knocked and her face changed to that of anger as I walked in.

“What the hell are you doing here?” She asked, standing to come around the hospital bed, standing in front of me with her arms crossed expectantly.

“I’ve been worried sick for hours. What the fuck happened tonight?” I said, shutting the door behind me.

“None of your business!” Y/N replied. “You shouldn’t be here. Please leave or I’ll call security.”

“Nah – nah – nah. Then go ahead and call them cause I’m not leaving until I get some answers.”

“You want answers Mr. Know-It-All? Now you want answers? Your beloved Bobby Thunder did this!” She pointed at her daughter in a hushed yell. “The guy you all think is so amazing, came to our hotel room and threatened to kill my kid, hit my mom, gave Zoey a concussion – all because I wouldn’t get back with him! Not so amazing now is he?”

“I – uh -” I stuttered, in shock from what I was hearing.

“It’s funny how he turned the tables. It’s funny how I was made to look like the bad guy. It’s funny how everyone talks about me behind my back and has their opinions but do any of them know the truth? No!” She continued. “Let me tell enlighten you before kicking your ass out of here. Bobby Thunder is a piece of shit! I was his wife for years! Loyal, faithful! He still beat the living shit out of me. When he almost caused me to miscarry I decided enough was enough. I filed for divorce. I filed assault charges. I went through all the loops. I was offered a deal in the divorce that if I dropped all charges: I’d never have to see him again, I’d get custody of my daughter and I’d get more than enough money to take care of her. I made the decision to take the money. I had no skill – I had no job – i had nothing to my name and I had a baby to take care of. I’d do it all again if I fucking had to!”

She stopped to catch her breath as tears streamed down her reddened cheeks.

“Of course his publicists were able to spin it all around, hide his charges, hide his drug you – make it seem like I was the one who took him for all he was worth and people like you” She pointed at me. “Are so quick to judge that nobody cared ask what really happened.”

“Jesus Christ. I had no idea.” I said, trying to close the distance between us.

She held her hand out, stopping me from getting any closer. “That’s right. You didn’t. I thought I could trust you. I thought you were different. That was my mistake” She shook her head, wiping her face. “I need you to leave. Please.”

Despite the numerous calls and texts, I hadn’t been able to get in touch with Y/N for weeks. News had spread around the company of Bobby’s arrest for domestic assault and people were starting to put two and two together.

I felt like total shit. I listened to everyone else instead of going with my gut. There was a million ways I could’ve gone around finding the truth from Y/N but I took the easy way out and bailed.

I owed her an apology. I owed her way more than an apology but it would be a good start.

“Ambrose to stage, please. Ambrose to stage.” The intercom sounded backstage catching my attention.

“Guess I finally get to see the changes creative made to my video.”

Aj laughed, finishing up his workout. “What’s this – 3rd time now?”

I shrugged my shoulders, giving him a fist-bump before leaving the workout room. I made my way out to the ring and the forest thing that caught eye was Y/N. Dressed in all black a always, she had her headset on, clipboard and IPad in hand.

She waved me over but barely gave me a glance as her eyes scanned the clipboard.

“Hey…“ I began, not sure of how to start. “I didn’t know you were -“

“So more footage was added from your last few lay per views.” She said, cutting me off. “I’ve got Ambrose.” She said into the mic. “Start when ready.”

The lights dimmed in the arena and the Tron light up with the video and music but I couldn’t pay attention to that.

“Y/N – will you just talk to me? How’s Zoey? She doing okay?” I asked – no begged – for any sort of or indication that we could ever have a connection again.

“She’s fine, like none of it ever happened.” She replied but changed the subject immediately. “So, you okay with it?”

“Yeah… it’s fine I guess. Not like it would matter if I liked it or not.”

“No, it only matters what your friends think.” She replied harshly before turning on her mic again. “Okay from Ambrose, call out Lynch next.”

“Y/N…”

“That’ll be all for now, thanks.” She dismissed me, returning her eyes to the clipboard.

With the house show coming to a close we bowed out of the ring and headed back inside. Everyone was getting ready to head to a bar nearby but I wasn’t in the mood for any of that. Instead, I opted to bother Y/N until she gave me another chance. As mad as she was, I’d have to make her see that it was an honest mistake.

I’d been having flowers delivered to her at arenas for days but no answer so far.

I knew she’d be supervising the crew as they took down the screens to make sure it was all done correctly so once the crowds emptied out, I walked back out to the arena. Sure enough, there she was clipboard in hand, marking off the number of the screen they’d just taken down.

“Hey.” I said, walking up behind her.

She didn’t turn to face me, or even glance back as I stood beside her. “Anything I can help you with?”

“Well, now that you mention it.” I smirked, shoving my hands in my pockets. “You can agree to a date tonight.”

“Don’t think so.” She shook her head.

“Come on – don’t you want to see me on my knees groveling for forgiveness?”

She finally turned her head to look at me. “What you did takes more than some flowers and groveling Dean. You took someone else’s word without even asking then you went on to date someone else immediately after like our time together meant nothing anyway. I loved you. You really hurt me.”

“Babe I know.” I sighed, placing a hand on her arm. Luckily, this time she didn’t pull away. “I fucked up. I should’ve come to you first. And I don’t know how to show you how sorry I am. I’ll spend the rest of my life proving it to you if I have to.”

With a sigh, she looked down at my hand on her. “I … fine. One date. That’s it.”

“Yes! Alright. I’ll shower – pick you up at the hotel around 11:30?”

“Ok.” She said, nodding her head before turning back to watch the crew.

I arrived at her hotel and waited in the lobby for her to come down. She wore a black low cut dress that fell right above her knees and a pair of black heels. Her hair was done, her makeup was done.

It took my breath away like she always did.

“You look beautiful.” I said, approaching her to place a kiss on her cheek.

“You clean up nice yourself.” She replied.

It brought an ease to the night that she was at least open to this instead of agreeing to a date only to stonewall me.

Taking her hand, I lead her out to the car, opening the door for her before getting in myself and driving off to the restaurant.

The drive was relatively close. She confirmed again that Zoey was doing good and since she was on a short travel week, the baby was home with her mom. As much as I wanted to see the kid, I needed to get on good terms with her first. It was probably better that we’d have the night to ourselves.

Once we got to the restaurant, it was relatively empty at this time of night on a Wednesday. They seated us by a window overlooking the water and lit a candle in between us before bringing out some wine and the menus.

We both looked at the menu, quiet at first before she looked up at me.

“This is really fancy, Dean.” She said, pursing her lips together. “I can’t even read half of these names.”

“Yeah – me neither.” I agreed, taking a breath of relief. “I just figured you deserved more than just a random bar after everything.”

She gave a half smile before setting down the menu. “I would actually kill for a beer and a burger right now.”

“Really?” I asked, my eyes slightly wide.

“Really.” She nodded.

God I loved her.

“Your wish. My command.” I started, calling over the waiter to say we wouldn’t be staying.

After paying for the wine, we left to go to the nearest bar. As crowded at it was, we found a booth towards the back corner and both of us relaxed into the seats after ordering a pitch of beer, an appetizer of onion rings and two cheeseburgers.

Even with all the noise, it was like we were the only two there. This was our environment.

“So – about that apology.” She said, shoving another onion ring in her mouth.

I laughed, biting my lip. “Babe – like I said. I may not have the words for it, but if you give me another chance, I’ll spend the rest of my life showing you. I can’t even begin to explain how miserable I’ve been since the breakup. Renee – she means nothing to me. Not like you do. I was so fucking stupid and I’ll never make that mistake again. I love you.”

“Swear it?” She asked, scooting closer to me.

“I fucking swear it babe.” I nodded, meeting her eyes. “So – will you be my girl again?”

“Yes.” She smiled, leaning in to kiss me.
